When developers could not sucessfully keep a tethering app on the App Store by means like Netshare, 15 year old developer Nick Lee thought to make something stealthier. The new approach came via a basic flashlight application, Handy Light, with the SOCKS proxy functionality tethering hidden behind it.

fring has just announced that its App Store application has received an update enabling two-way video calling on the new iPhone 4 via both Wi-Fi and 3G. This update to fring also adds support for multitasking on iOS 4, a cross-community social stream integrating tweets, Facebook updates, chats, and calls, and address book improvements.

We recently reported that iPhone 4 users were experiencing slow upload speeds on AT&T 3G data in many parts of the United States. At the time it was unclear whether the issue, which limited upload speeds in many markets to 100 kbps, was an intentional cap placed by AT&T or if there was some sort of network issue or maintenance operation causing the slowdown.

iPhone 4 users from a number of locations around the United States have been reporting significant drops in data upload speeds on AT&T’s 3G network. Many of these users are seeing upload speeds maxing out at only 100 kbps, far below the 1500 kbps these same users were seeing before the weekend on their HSUPA-compatible devices.

One of the key features of iPhone 4 is its ability to record high-definition video in 720p. Users have found, however, that getting the HD video off of the device requires connecting it to a computer for download. While Apple offers users simple options for sharing videos directly from the iPhone via email or MMS, or by uploading the videos to MobileMe or YouTube, those mechanisms result in compression of the files, losing significantly quality in the process.
